Teaching

There are a number of courses and educational workshops I have taught.

A. Educator

  • Spring, 2017
  • Fundamentals of GIS, Surveying I, and Capstone Design, Chosun University
  • My role:
  • I taught Fundamentals of GIS, Surveying I, and Capstone Design in the spring, Chosun University.
  • Spring, 2017
  • Programming for GIS (GEOG 489), The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
  • My role:
  • I led GEOG 489 (Programming for GIS) course as an instructor, Spring 2017 in the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Science. Topics include the principles of programming, advanced function and tools coding, visualization, fundamental spatial data structures, and spatial algorithms. After I moved to Chosun University, Dr. Zhe took over the class.
  • Nov., 2016
  • R on ROGER, The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
  • My role:
  • I led R on Roger at CyberGIS Fall Training Workshops as an instructor. This workshop provided how to use parallel processing for R in geospatial applications by using Jupyter Notebook.
  • July, 2016
  • R on ROGER, The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
  • My role:
  • I taught how to use R for big spatial data analysis on ROGER, CyberGIS Summer School. R is a popular statistics and data analytics system. This workshop provides how to leverage parallel processing in R, and how to connect R up to Hadoop.
  • March, 2016
  • Advanced Topics in GIS (GEOG 479), The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
  • My role:
  • I taught big data analysis with R in the course of Advanced Topics in GIS (GEOG 479). This sub-course deals with the fundamentals of parallel R computation as well as Hadoop with R to have a better undersanding of big spatial data sets.
  • November, 2015
  • CyberGIS Fall Workshops, The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
  • My role:
  • I provided two workshops: Data Parallelism for GIS Analysis, and Data Science with Pig on Hadoop. My role for Data Parallelism for GIS Analysis is to introduce the fundamentals of parallel R computation. In Data Science with Pig on Hadoop, I lead the workshop for transforming raw big data to provide structure of the data by using Pig on Hadoop computing framework.
  • July, 2015
  • CyberGIS Summer School on Big Data Landscapes, The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
  • My role:
  • I provided Data Science with Python on Hadoop workshop. This workshop offered hands-on training with cutting-edge CyberGIS applications.

B. Teaching Assistant

  • Semester 1, 2014
  • Spatial Databases, The University of Melbourne.
  • My role:
  • Assist my supervisor in the course.
